It didn’t get as much play in the papers or online, but Saturday, the 26th of November, was “Shop Small” Saturday; a day to support local business by shopping in stores within your community.
Hannibal, Mo., is very fortunate to have a wealth of local stores from which to choose, and “Shop Small” Saturday reminded me just how lucky we are. For all the focus that is put on the “newest,” “biggest,” and next “best” thing, I’m pretty sure we’ve all figured out that, in 6 months, there will be an even “newer,” “bigger,” next “best-est” thing.
So how does this fit into the title of Shop Small Saturday? I’m getting to that. But first, a digression. I’m very lucky. Most of my family is at the stage where if they have to dust it, they don’t want it. If they can’t eat it, they don’t want it. But how, might you ask, is it possible to buy a gift for someone like that? Easy! Shop Small!
Some ground (or whole bean) coffee from the local coffee shop. Boom. Dad’s done. A piece of locally made jewelry for mom. Check. A serving dish for my sister from a local artisan (you can’t dust something that has a pie in it!) Done. Chocolates for my co-workers, movie tickets for the babysitter, Mark Twain: Words and Music CD for my sister-in-law who will be teaching English, voila!
Not a single, solitary line to stand in. Not even the hint of a threat of mace! Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t promote coming to downtown Hannibal to do your shopping, but even if you can’t make it Northeast, there are still plenty of shops that offer online storefronts. So happy shopping!
